Walter Wangerin, Jr. describes well the damage caused by betrayal. "Trust permits life to flow among people in relationship. Trust is as precious as the arteries of a physical body: they carry the blood. The rupture of such trust, then, causes life itself to hemorrhage. When one member of a relationship sins against the relationship by breaking trust, all of its people suffer mortal shock. Without forgiveness, without stanching the flow and healing the wound, something dies. And the more significant the relationship had been, the more grievous shall be the feelings of those bereaved." (MOURNING INTO DANCING, ¬© 1992 Zondervan, p. 93)
